Bras. 32(8) The study aimed to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns and to identify molecular resistance markers in Staphylococcus spp. (n=210) isolated from small ruminant mastitis in Brazil. The antimicrobial resistance patterns were evaluated by the disk diffusion test and by detection of the presence of mecA, blaZ, ermA, ermB, ermC and msrA genes by PCR. The efϐlux pump test was performed using ethidium bromide and bioϐilm production was determined by Congo red agar test along with PCR for detection of the icaD gene. The isolates were most resistant to amoxicillin (50.0%), streptomycin (42.8%), tetracycline (40.4%), lincomycin (39.0%) and erythromycin (33.8%). Pan-susceptibility to all tested drugs was observed in 71 (33.8%) isolates and 41 Staphylococcus isolates were positive for the efϐlux pump. Although phenotypic resistance to oxacillin was observed in 12.8% of the isolates, none harbored the mecA gene. However, 45.7% of the isolates harbored blaZ indicating that beta-lactamase production was the main mechanism associated with staphylococci resistance to beta-lactams in the present study. The other determinants of resistance to antimicrobial agents ermA, ermB, ermC, and msrA were observed in 1.4%, 10.4%, 16.2%, and 0.9% of the isolates, respectively. In addition, the icaD gen was detected in 32.9% of the isolates. Seventy three isolates (54 from goats and 19 from sheep) were negative for all resistance genes tested and 69 isolates presented two or more resistance genes. Association among blaZ, ermA, ermB, ermC and efϐlux pump were observed in 17 isolates, 14 of which originated from goats and three from sheep. The data obtained in this study show the resistance of the isolates to beta-lactamics, which may be associated with the use of antimicrobial drugs without veterinary control.

The present study was conducted at the Sahelian Experimental Station in Toukounous Niger, on three herds of Azawak zebu breed in order to evaluate antimicrobial susceptibility of a total of 43 Staphylococcus aureus isolated from 164 milk samples of cows with subclinical mastitis from 2010 to 2012. The highest frequency of resistance was observed for the β-lactam family: penicillin (46%) followed by oxacillin (12%). Twenty isolates were sensitive to all tested antibiotics, 12 were resistant to one of them and 11 were multi-resistant (2 to 5 antibiotics). The resistance percentage to oxacillin, enrofloxacin and clindamycin varied significantly over the 3 years (p <0.05) but not to the other antibiotics. Moreover, 90% of S. aureus isolates resistant to penicillin detected by in vitro disk diffusion possessed the blaZ gene. In conclusion, the isolates from cases of mastitis at Toukounous are more resistant to the antibiotics frequently used for treatments at the station than to other antibiotics.

Staphylococcus aureus es un patógeno importante que causa cerca de 11% a 33% de las bacteriemias hospitalarias y un porcentaje importante de las adquiridas en la comunidad, con una tasa de complicaciones cercana a 50%. En la siguiente revisión se destaca la epidemiología de la bacteriemia por S. aureus, con especial referencia a la situación de este patógeno en Colombia, la frecuencia y los mecanismos de resistencia a los medicamentos más frecuentemente usados en este contexto, y se discuten los elementos semiológicos, clínicos y de laboratorio que influyen en el enfoque diagnóstico y terapéutico de los pacientes con bacteriemia por este microorganismo.Palabras clave: Staphylococcus aureus/patogenicidad, bacteriemia/terapia, bacteriemia/ epidemiología, agentes antibacterianos/uso terapéutico. Therapeutic approach to Staphylococcus aureus bacteremiaStaphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogen, responsible for 11-33% of the bacteremias acquired in the hospital setting and nearly 50% of those acquired in the community at large. The epidemiology of S. aureus bacteremia is discussed, with an special emphasis on the situation in Colombia and the resistance mechanisms against the major drug groups used for the treatment. The clinical keys and laboratory support for the appropriate clinical approaches are presented together with the therapeutic strategies for the treatment of patients with S. aureus bacteremia.

Abstract: Results indicated a separate evolution for plasmid- and chromosomally-encoded blaZ. Although a common gene pool seems to exist among staphylococci, exchange of blaZ between strains and species is judged to be an extremely rare event.
