RESUMENSe describe la variabilidad en riqueza de especies y abundancia de los organismos bentónicos asociados a fondos blandos sublitorales de la entrada oriental del estrecho de Magallanes. Se identificaron un total de 49 taxa, pertenecientes a 9 categorías taxonómicas superiores. El taxon más diverso fue poliquetos con 27 taxa (56% de los grupos macrobentónicos). Los crustáceos comprendieron 11 taxa (20%), moluscos 4 taxa (8%) y equinodermos 3 taxa (6%). Los grupos cnidarios, nemertinos, priapúlidos, ascidias y braquiópodos estuvieron representados por una especie cada uno (10% en total). Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la comunidad bentónica se caracteriza por la presencia de una estructura de especies relativamente simple, con poblaciones numéricamente empobrecidas y una dominancia específica relativamente baja. Se observó un alto reemplazo de especies tanto entre muestras dentro de cada sector estudiado como entre los sectores de muestreo. Se sugiere que el disturbio físico causado por las corrientes del área con una consecuente disrupción de los sedimentos y una alteración significativa en los patrones de movimiento, sedimentación y erosión, sería un factor clave en el control de la composición temporal y espacial de la comunidad bentónica en el área estudiada.Palabras clave: Subantártica, macrobentos, diversidad, riqueza de especies ABSTRACT This paper describes the variability in species richness and abundance of benthic organisms associated with sub littoral soft bottom at the eastern entrance of the Straits of Magellan. We identified a total of 49 taxa belonging to 9 taxonomic categories. The polychaetes were the more diverse taxon with 27 taxonomic categories (56% of the macrobenthic groups). Crustaceans comprised 11 categories (20%), mollusks 4 categories (8%) and echinoderms 3 categories (6%). The cnidarians, nemerteans, priapulids, brachiopods and ascidians were represented by one species each (10% in total). The results showed that the benthic community is characterized by the presence of a relatively simple structure of species with impoverished populations and relatively low specific dominance. We observed a high species turnover among samples within each sector and across studied sectors. The physical disturbance caused by the currents of the area leads to a disruption of the sediments and a significant change in movement patterns, sedimentation and erosion, and appears to be a key factor controlling the temporal and spatial composition of the benthic community in the study area.

A B S T R A C TThe northern coast of Rio de Janeiro State lacks natural consolidate substrates, making it a proper environment to the development of researches using artificial structures. After studies about the type of substrate, concrete seems to be the most appropriate for studying fouling community development. This research was carried out to investigate the functional role of biofouling in the development of the ichthyic community in the north of Rio de Janeiro State. Percentage data of the epibenthic organisms' coverage and samples of the fish community with gillnet and visual census showed that biofouling in artificial reefs might have more than one functional role, acting as a facilitator in the recruitment of fish species and as a link in the trophic marine chain. Through the increase of localized structural complexity provided by the reef itself and by the fouling organisms which act as "engineering species", additional protection options are offered to the ichthyic community, especially recruits. Also, the epibiont biomass represents an important link in the food web, acting either as a direct source or in the transference of energy to higher trophic levels. Through the relationship between the ichthyic and fouling communities we concluded that the functional role of the latter in artificial reef habitats could be characterized mainly as shelter and feeding grounds for few fish species. R E S U M OO litoral norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro possui uma escassez de substrato consolidado natural tornando o ambiente propício para o desenvolvimento de pesquisas com estruturas artificiais. Após estudos conclusivos sobre o tipo de substrato, o concreto parece ser o mais apropriado para o desenvolvimento da comunidade incrustante. Novas pesquisas foram realizadas para investigar o papel funcional da bioincrustação no desenvolvimento da comunidade íctica no norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Dados de porcentagem de cobertura dos organismos epibênticos e amostragens da comunidade nectônica com rede de espera e censo visual, evidenciaram que a bioincrustação em recifes artificiais pode assumir mais de um papel funcional, como facilitadora no recrutamento de espécies de peixes e como elo na cadeia trófica marinha. Através do incremento da complexidade estrutural fornecida pelo próprio recife e pelos organismos incrustantes que atuam como "espécies engenheiras", opções adicionais de proteção são oferecidas para a comunidade íctica, principalmente recrutas. Além disso, a biomassa epibionte representa um importante elo na cadeia alimentar, atuando como fonte direta de alimento e/ou transferência de energia para níveis tróficos superiores. Através da relação entre as comunidades íctica e incrustante, conclui-se que o papel funcional desta última em habitats recifais artificiais caracteriza-se principalmente como abrigo e para algumas espécies também como alimentação.

RESUMEN.A pesar que la interacción entre parásitos y hospederos es constante, y obligatoria para los parásitos, las variaciones espaciales de estas relaciones son poco conocidas. En este estudio se cuantifica y compara las interacciones parásito-hospedero en peces de pozas intermareales de la zona centro (33°S) y centrosur (36°S) de Chile. Se recolectó un total de 2.081 peces desde 56 pozas intermareales. Se comparó la biomasa y abundancia de peces entre las pozas de las dos zonas: centro (ZC) y centro-sur (ZCS). Para el análisis de las comunidades de parásitos se consideraron especies de peces comunes entre la ZC y ZCS, y se comparó la prevalencia, abundancia, riqueza y diversidad de parásitos. Tanto la abundancia y biomasa de peces como los parámetros comunitarios de parásitos, fueron estandarizados al volumen de la poza (m 3 ). Pese a que hubo diferencias, entre ambas zonas, en la abundancia y biomasa en algunas especies de peces y en al menos un parámetro comunitario de parásitos, esas diferencias desaparecieron luego de estandarizar los datos a m 3 . Se detectó una media-baja similitud de especies parásitas entre zonas de muestreo (<55%). Sin embargo, los parámetros de interacción parásito-hospedero (conectancia y densidad de vínculos) no fueron distintos. Esto se puede deber, en parte, a la similitud en la riqueza de especies de peces, independiente de la especie de parásito, que mantendría su "carga de especies parásitas". Las comunidades de parásitos de peces se han determinado como insaturadas, lo que significa que no tienen todas las especies posibles que pueden albergar, por lo que quedarían microhábitats disponibles en los hospederos para ser ocupados por especies parásitas propias de un lugar.
