Diversity in the Dismal Science: The Stanford Experience

Abstract: Efforts to diversify the economics profession have included increasing the number of African Americans and other people of color who enroll in and complete the PhD degree in economics. This article recounts the experiences of African Americans who entered graduate study at Stanford University between 1967 and 1984 and the university’s record of adding to the pool of African American PhD economists.
