Abstract: Takecallis nigroantennatus Wieczorek sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Aphididae), associated with the cold hardy bamboo variety Fargesia spp. (Bambusoideae), is described and illustrated along with a key to species of the genus Takecallis. The results of a mitochondrial COI (DNA barcoding) and nuclear elongation factor 1 (EF1α) gene sequences, which confirm the genetic difference of the new taxon from the other congeneric species, are provided. The bamboo-feeding aphid genus Takecallis (Hemiptera: Aphididae) contains eight taxa of Oriental origin. Four of them are introduced to Europe, where they are treated as a pest on Bambusoideae, showing invasive behavior with regard to range expansion, host plant spectrum and the ability to engage in an anholocyclic (without sexual phase) mode of reproduction. In contrast, the current field study confirms that the newly described species, the hardy bamboo aphid Takecallis nigroantennatus, reproduces holocyclically in temperate climatic conditions. The previously unknown morphs, i.e. the oviparous females and winged males, are described and illustrated in light and scanning electron microscopy. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were employed to evaluate the effects of insect feeding on the photosynthetic performance and general health of the host plant. The implications of the ability to holocycle and the overwintering of eggs on the spread of a potentially invasive aphid species are discussed.

The paper presents the first report and morphological description of aphids feeding on the mycoheterotrophic plant Monotropa hypophegea Wallr. of the family Ericaceae. This is the first known case of aphids feeding on a mycoheterotrophic plant, additionally involved in mutualistic relation with ants Lasius niger (Hymenoptera, Formicinae). This observation took place on an overgrown, postmining spoil tip in southern Poland (Europe). Barcode COI sequencing and morphological examination indicated that the collected specimens of aphids belong to A. fabae s. lat., a group of closely related species. The discussion focuses on taxonomic issues concerning the species identity of the collected aphids and the ecological interactions between insects, plants, and fungi involved in the observed association. The presence of ants attending aphids indicates the possibility of ants serving as pollinators of M. hypophegea.

The genus Trioxys Haliday, 1833 consists of more than 80 species worldwide with three species being recorded in South Korea. In this study, we report the first observation of the two additional species, T. liui Chou & Chou, 1993 from Takecallis arundinariae (Essig, 1917) on Phyllostachys bambusoides Siebold & Zucc., 1843 and T. remaudierei Starý & Rakhshani, 2017 from T. taiwana (Takahashi, 1926) on Sasa borealis (Hack.) Makino & Shibata, 1901. Trioxys liui and T. remaudierei are described and reported with phototographs of the diagnostic morphological characters and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) data (barcode region) and Bayesian tree of the phylogenetic analysis amongst the closely-related taxa are provided.
