Do ADHD Children With and Without Child Behavior Checklist–Dysregulation Profile Have Different Clinical Characteristics, Cognitive Features, and Treatment Outcomes?

Abstract: Variables that were independently associated with CBCL-DP were clinical severity (ADHD Rating Scale [ADHD-RS]), internalized disorders, high emotionality (EAS), and low self-directedness (JTCI). CBCL-DP was associated neither with poorer response to methylphenidate nor with more side effects. There were no differences in cognitive performances between participants with and without CBCL-DP.

“…Since this is the first attempt to unveil the relation between aggression and character maturity in a male violent offender sample the need for replication in other offender samples is pressing. There is, however, support for a relation between the character dimension of low Self-Directedness and anger from studies on subjects with an anger syndrome (39), and with attempted suicide (40), while aggressive behavior have been related to low Self-Directedness in children with Child Behavior Checklist-Dysregulation (41). These results, taken together with ours, add to the picture of character maturity as a vital psychological construct of importance for the experience of anger and aggression and the ability to control and regulate aggressive reactions.…”

“…() demonstrated lower aggression and emotional dysregulation scores on the CBCL in 8–12‐year‐old children with Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD) and ADHD. Peyre, Speranza, Cortese, Wohl, and Purper‐Ouakil () noted in their sample that the Child Behavior Checklist – Dysregulation Profile was not associated with a poorer response of ADHD symptoms to MPH or to increased adverse effects. An additional clinical study of the effect of MPH on emotional dysregulation among 7–13‐year‐old children with ADHD + ODD or conduct disorder showed that treatment with MPH over 1 year was effective in improving emotional dysregulation symptoms significantly, independent of both the positive effects from a parent behavior management program and the degree of improvement in the children's ADHD symptoms (Kutlu, Akyol, & Ercan, ).…”

“…In addition, some studies focused on the neurocognitive implications of co-occurring high levels of internalising and externalising symptoms, for instance in children with ADHD with comorbid internalising symptoms. These studies show inconsistent results, that vary between better test performance [21], no difference [22], to worse performance in tasks of attention, response inhibition and working memory [23] than children with ADHD only.…”
