Do Bats Roost and Forage in Shade Coffee Plantations? A Perspective from the Frugivorous Bat Sturnira hondurensis

Abstract: Shade coffee plantations are considered important habitats for frugivorous bats. However, it is not known if bats use this agricultural habitat for shelter, food resources, or both. This study addresses these questions using the highland yellow-shouldered bat (Sturnira hondurensis) as an example. Twenty-six adult individuals of S. hondurensis were captured, 50 percent in tropical montane cloud forest (TMCF) and 50 percent in shade coffee plantations (SCP) in Veracruz, Mexico, and each was fitted with a radio t… Show more

“…). Such a landscape scale is consistent with other studies (e.g., Meyer and Kalko ) and known distances between roost and foraging areas (600–800 m, Sturnira hondurensis , Cortés‐Delgado and Sosa ; 800 m, Carollia perspicillata , Heithaus and Fleming ), home range sizes (9.0 ha, Artibeus watsoni ; 3.8 ha, Micronycteris microtis , Albrecht et al. ), and feeding areas (1.5–51 ha, Glossophaga soricina , Lemke ) of many of the species we encounter.…”

“…Little is known about the roosting habits of bats of the genus Sturnira. Recent research shows that they typically roost in tree cavities situated several meters above ground (Fenton et al 2000;Evelyn & Stiles 2003;OrtizRamírez et al 2006;Loayza & Loiselle 2008;Cortés-Delgado & Sosa 2014).…”
