Do durum wheat producers benefit of vertical coordination?

Abstract: This study aims at assessing if benefits, based on the economic performance of farms operating in an agro-food supply chain, are generated by a vertical coordination. A panel data (2008)(2009)(2010)(2011) of durum wheat producers was used, namely the Italian Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). Outcomes of coordinated and non-coordinated farms with equal farm and farmer characteristics were calculated through different economic performance measures. A propensity score-matching model was implemented to take ac… Show more

“…Handayati and colleagues [54] identified four different chain coordination mechanisms: (1) supply chain contract, (2) information sharing, (3) joint decision-making, and (4) collective learning, although all relevant and current papers focus on the first one. Contracting is the most diffused mechanism of coordination in the agri-food supply chain for managing tactical and operational decisions [70,71]. Contract models in the agri-food sector have been specifically discussed to investigate vertical and horizontal chain integration, as they highlight the pros and cons of investing in a cooperative setting [5,66,71,72].…”

Contract models in the agri-food sector have been specifically discussed to investigate vertical and horizontal chain integration, as they highlight the pros and cons of investing in a cooperative setting [5,66,71,72]. Furthermore, a growing number of studies have specifically investigated the biomass supply chains with the lenses of contract mechanisms as a mean to foster coordination [52,55,73,74].…”

“…Technical and technological risks are the main constraints in production expansion. As for organizational adaptation of grain complex to conditions of export expansion implementation, from the view point of many economists, vertical coordination and integration will facilitate effectiveness of the complex [Belaya, 2016], [Carillo, 2017], [Pall, 2014].…”

“…Carillo, Caracciolo, and Cembalo (2017) have proven the importance of coordinating the efforts in shaping marketing sales policies. Using 2008-2011 panel data on Italian farm businesses that specialize in growing durum wheat, the authors conclude that participating in vertically coordinated associations provides farmers with increased sales profitability, or so-called "coordination awards" (Carillo, Caracciolo, & Cembalo, 2017).…”
