Do inferior vena cava filters reduce the risk of acute pulmonary embolism in preoperative patients with venous thromboembolism?

Abstract: This study suggested that the addition of IVCF to anticoagulants does not provide a substantial risk reduction for perioperative patients with VTE prior to surgery.

“…into the heart or pulmonary arteries), insertion-site thrombosis and IVC thrombosis [6]. A study by Deguchi et al similarly demonstrated that the addition of IVC filters to anticoagulant therapy did not significantly reduce the risks of perioperative patients with VTE prior to surgery [7]. It also described occurrences such as major filter migration, persistent attached thrombosis and connection failure.…”

“…The inferior vena cava fi lter (IVC fi lter) can prevent recurrent APTE. 19 Kucher et al reported 0% (0/11) recurrence of APTE within 90 days in patients with massive APTE, after placement of an IVC fi lter, versus 13% (13/97) in patients who did not receive an IVC fi lter. 15 Sakuma et al reported the same result in an analysis of a multicenter registry in Japan.…”

“…Use of an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter should be considered when a patient has contraindications to anticoagulation or a history of recurrent VTE on prophylaxis 823 . Although controversial, the utilization of IVC filters has increased over the years, especially with the advent of percutaneous insertion 866,867 . IVC filters in high-risk patients with an acute proximal DVT have been shown to initially prevent acute PE 868 , and can capture a thrombus in up to 13% of patients postoperatively 869 .…”
