Do Natural Resources Impede Renewable Energy Production in the EU? A Mixed-Methods Analysis

Abstract: Since signing the Amsterdam Treaty in 1997, the European Union (EU) has been working on increasing its renewable energy supply. However, the progress has been uneven across member states. A vibrant literature advances several explanations for this variation, but pays insufficient attention to a critical structural factorvarying levels of natural resource wealth across the EUand provides an incomplete account by focusing on consumption indicators. Reconciling divergent views in the literature in a single framew… Show more

“…The excessive exploration of NR could impact the EF (Zafar et al 2019). Natural resources such as forest and croplands reduce human-caused emissions (Panayotou 1993;GFN 2018), whereas resources such as coal and oil decline environmental quality (Ahmadov, van der Borg 2019). The link between NR consumption/exploration and economic growth cannot be overemphasised.…”

“…Simultaneously, the exploitation and use of marine resources is an important influencing factor for technological development (Tsuboi, 2019). As Ahmadov and van der Borg (2019) suggest, the abundance of marine resources facilitates the development of renewable energy technologies within the country.…”

“…This is the backbone of all the current centralized power grid systems experienced by countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Spain, Ireland, China, and etc. One hundred and thirty (130) years ago, these were the bases for early development and industrialization [15]. These systems were initially few and scattered.…”
