Do pre-sowing treatments affect seed germination in Albizia richardiana and Lagerstroemia speciosa?

Abstract: In this paper, seed morphology and effects of pre-sowing treatments were studied. Matured seeds of the species were collected from healthy trees in the National Botanical Garden, Bangladesh, and treated with five presowing treatments. The average length, breadth and thickness were found to be 0.56AE0.03 cm, 0.44AE0.009 cm and 0.26AE0.008 cm in Albizia richardiana King and Prain, and 1.32AE0.02 cm, 0.55AE0.04 cm and 0.11AE0.002 cm in Lagerstroemia speciosa L., respectively. Germination was carried out in polyba… Show more

“…Seed treatment is to ensure to both enhance and uniform germination (Azad et al 2006a). The effect of pre-sowing treatments on seed germination of some tropical forest tree species are reported (Ahamed et al 1983;Matin and Rashid 1992;Bharwas and Chakraborty 1994;Ali et al 1997;Koirala et al 2000;Khan et al 2001;Hossain 2005a and2005b;Matin et al 2006;Azad et al 2006aAzad et al , 2006bAzad et al , 2010aAzad et al and 2010b. However, there are few documents available on the effect of pre-sowing treatment of A. auriculiformis.…”

“…By this time, it is successfully practiced in some middle and northern part of the country, but there are scarcity of planting materials due to poor seed germination percentages. Intensive plantation in agroforestry, social forestry, and home garden is limited because of destitute seed germination and delayed nursery establishment (Azad et al, 2010a;2010b). Germination success can be improved through adopting appropriate presowing techniques (Maguire, 1962;Koirala et al, 2000;Alamgir and Hossain, 2005a;2005b;Azad et al, 2006a;2006b).…”
