Do regional trade agreements increase trade? Empirical evidence from the Asia–Pacific region

Abstract: This article examines the effects of regional trade agreements. The augmented gravity model of international trade is used to test for trade creation and diversion in the context of trade agreements in the Asia-Pacific region. The results of the estimated model indicate that trade has increased among the members of AFTA and APTA but not among the AANZFTA members. Differences in the levels of development appear to have a significant impact on trade flows, suggesting that there can be no general presumption abou… Show more

“…Therefore, food supply may be imported from the other ASEAN countries by Indian and Japanese importers, which results in the decrease of Vietnam's agricultural exports. In addition, the negative impact of RTAs membership in this paper is similar to relevant research of Gharleghi and Shafighi (2020), Jagdambe and Kannan (2020), Lohani (2020), and Narayan and Nguyen (2016). Moreover, Kahouli (2016) has argued that the trade creation effect of RTAs, which is proxied by the dummy variables of RTAs membership, is unstable and unpredictable.…”

“…In the model which assist by ppml estimation, the dependent variable which is export value without logarithmic form. This research are modified the gravity model which referring to the research model of Carrère et al (2020), Endoh et al (2013), Gharleghi & Shafighi (2020), Sun & Reed (2010), and Yang & Martinez-Zarzoso (2014) whom contain the three dummy variables as proxies of the impact of trade creation, export trade diversion and import trade diversion. The gravity equation which applies in this study could be seen as follows:…”

“…The impact assessment of several FTAs of ASEAN is widely done; however, only a few studies evaluate their impacts on trade flows (or intra-bloc trade flows) simultaneously. The major contribution of our study is that, unlike previous studies (Gharleghi & Shafighi, 2020;Jagdambe & Kannan, 2020;Lee & Park, 2021;Yang & Martinez-Zarzoso, 2014), it assesses the impact of ASEAN FTAs under a theory-consistent structural gravity framework of international trade, which includes intra-national trade flows.…”
