Do researchers use open research data? Exploring the relationships between usage trends and metadata quality across scientific disciplines from the Figshare case

Abstract: Open research data (ORD) have been considered a driver of scientific transparency. However, data friction, as the phenomenon of data underutilisation for several causes, has also been pointed out. A factor often called into question for ORD low usage is the quality of the ORD and associated metadata. This work aims to illustrate the use of ORD, published by the Figshare scientific repository, concerning their scientific discipline, their type and compared with the quality of their metadata. Considering all the… Show more

“…Many potential synthesis datasets are inaccessible or of limited value due to poor‐quality metadata (Quarati & Raffaghelli, 2020). Data may be difficult to find or access because they are published in a language that is not native to the investigator, not digitized, or housed in databases with barriers to access (Haddaway & Bayliss, 2015).…”

“…It has been pointed out that a factor often called into question for scientific data low usage is DQ (Quarati and Raffaghelli, 2020). According to the 37 researchers’ experiences in dealing with scientific data mentioned in Section 3, the authors analyse and explore the critical DQ issues that have frequently emerged in each step of the general scientific data life cycle model.…”

“…Academic journal publishers are implementing supplementary data file hosting on large repositories. For example, Mendeley Data hosts supplementary material for Elsevier Journals, while Figshare 15 17 hosts data from Earth Science publications in journals from Springer Nature, The Geological Society of London, The Geological Society of America, and Taylor & Francis. Such repositories are important data resources and allow researchers to use automated techniques to search and collect data such as web scraping.…”
