The paints, coatings, and surface technologies industry's global supply chains have grappled with severe shortages and significant disruptions. This research investigates the underlying causes behind this failure, which results from a complex interplay of interconnected events with a cascading impact. Logistical challenges, plant accidents, environmental regulations, Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a surge in demand, have led to undesirable outcomes and highlighted management challenges. Adopting a pragmatic approach, the study identified practical solutions managers and procurement teams could adopt. Utilizing an inductive methodology, the research focused on the root causes of the crisis, emphasizing that understanding the origin is essential for effective management. To validate the proposed strategies, a survey among industry practitioners was conducted. Relevant case studies of market leaders were examined focusing on the inbound logistics and procurement perspective, highlighting the critical role of strategic procurement and supply chain risk management for company competitiveness and survival in challenging circumstances. At the organizational level, the research identifies a gap in understanding the compatibility of lean principles in supply chain management with the realities of globalised supply chains.

PurposePrefabricated construction has been rapidly developing and intensifying the reliance on the supply chain. The pandemic of COVID-19 induced severe disruptions to the supply chain operation and thus attracted the research attention on the supply chain resilience (SCR) under various events. Assessing the resilience of the prefabricated construction supply chain (PCSC) is essential for surviving the shifting disruptive attacks and ensuring consistent, reliable operation. Based on the ripple effect and supply chain performance (SCP), this study aims to develop an assessment model for SCR of PCSC.Design/methodology/approachHaving identified the roles and material flows among stakeholders, a PCSC network is established. Utilizing the ripple effect model, it develops an assessment framework tailored for PCSCs, which then evolves into a comprehensive assessment model for evaluating the SCR by integrating the disruptive influence and the pre-and post-disruption SCP. Case study is then applied to validate the model.FindingsUsing SCP metrics and disruptive influence assessment as basic dimensions, the SCR can be assessed and expressed through a vector formula. Operating costs and asset utilization can effectively reflect changes in resilience, paying attention to their real-time changes can provide a better judgment of the current stage of disruptions.Originality/valueThe assessment model of SCR accounts for the ripple effect within prefabricated construction, offering a thorough understanding of how disruptions impact the entire supply chain network. Additionally, this model introduces a novel approach to evaluating SCR in reverse by leveraging SCP metrics instead of direct measurement, thereby minimizing potential biases.

This study aims to explore the relationship between family involvement in a business and the managerial factors that influence the success of recent business developments. The research is guided by three key questions focusing on the connection between family involvement and managerial factors, how these factors are managed in family firms, and the differences in management approaches between family and non-family firms. Utilizing the Johansen-Juselius cointegration method, the study examines the end-of-day relationship between financial development and economic strategies in Chinese firms. Findings suggest that managerial quality, as signaled through reputation and past performance, plays a critical role in securing government support and resource allocation, ultimately influencing the economic strategy in China.
