Do subtypes of maritally violent men continue to differ over time?

Abstract: In previous batterer typology studies, only 1 study gathered longitudinal data and no research examined whether subtypes continue to differ from one another over time. The present study did so. We predicted that, at 1.5- and 3-year follow-ups, the subtypes identified at Time 1 (A. Holtzworth-Munroe, J. C. Meehan.

“…Holtzworth-Munroe et al (2003) then assessed the characteristics of the sample on which they tested their typology (HoltzworthMunroe et al, 2000) 1.5 (Time 2) and 3 years (Time 3) after the initial assessment. They did not reconduct cluster analyses to test stability of the classifications.…”

“…Rather, we discuss some of the major and most influential typologies in the field. For such reviews, the reader is referred to Cavanaugh and Gelles (2005), Holtzworth-Munroe and Stuart (1994), and HoltzworthMunroe, Meehan, Herron, Rehman, and Stuart (2003). Second, we outline a dyadic model of couples aggression and the ways that such a model may be more helpful in conceptualizing the development of the behavior over time, including issues of persistence and desistance.…”
