Do very preterm twins and singletons differ in their neurodevelopment at 5 years of age?

Abstract: Compared with very preterm singletons, twins had higher mortality, no difference with respect to severe deficiencies, but slightly lower MPC scores at 5 years.

“…Similarly, sensorimotor performance of some of IH-mice did not differ from that of their naïve counterparts. These results are in agreement with clinical epidemiological data which demonstrate that not all, but~10-15% of VLBW prematurely born children develop cerebral palsy, and 25-50% children exhibit mild sensorimotor, cognitive and behavioral deficit (Bodeau-Livinec et al, 2013;Schlapbach et al, 2012;Volpe et al, 2011). The extent of sensorimotor deficit did not significantly correlate with the degree of hypomyelination (MBP cerebral expression) in IH-mice.…”

“…Manuck et al (2014) utilized the Bayley Scale of Infant Development (BSID) and Mental Development Index (MDI), and cerebral palsy was assessed by a pediatric neurologist (Manuck et al, 2014). Bodeau-Livinec et al (2013) utilized the Kaufmann Assessment Battery for Children for cognitive assessment, and cerebral palsy was also assessed, while Gnanendran et al (2015) utilized the BSID and Griffiths Mental Development Scales. Hjern et al (2012) utilized test scores from the 'Enlistment Battery 80' , used for military conscription at 18-19 years of age to create an indicator of IQ and grade point averages from the national school register, while Eras et al (2013) utilized the BSID, MDI, and Psychomotor Developmental Index (PDI).…”

“…Most research on multiples either does not distinguish between triplets and twins or focuses only on twins and there is a lack of data on the outcomes and care of very preterm triplet deliveries. Triplet pregnancies are rare, with a median of 0.3 per 1000 pregnancies in Europe in 2010, and these births are often excluded from analyses of very preterm births because there are too few cases in any given sample.…”
