Documentation of Structural Damage and Material Decay Phenomena in H-Bim Systems

Abstract: Abstract. The paper presents the results of an experimental research activity aimed to individuate digital tools for an intelligent mapping of structural and material decay of historical buildings. The activities carried out are part of the context of Scan-to-BIM processes, as they establish a workflow that, starting from 3D survey data, leads to an information model enriched by information related to the conservation state of surfaces and to the structural characteristics of the real building. The experimentat… Show more

“…HBIM 3D mapping of the state of preservation has been tested on the recto and verso of the metal alloy door of the tabernacle of the high altar (Figures 6) and The OBJ models, transformed into IFC, were imported into ACCA software's usBIM web platform, which it used as a common workspace. For the purposes of experimentation, it was decided to first import the mesh models into the BIM authoring software Edificius as generic proxies 3D object, to proceed with the object-oriented 3D mapping of the state of preservation (HBIM bar: Decay Area and Crack proxy objects), (Lanzara et al, 2021) and with the export in IFC format.…”

“…Historical building, especially the church, is a highly complex system. It can be discretized into macro-elements, then into elements and micro-elements, and their parts and sub-parts, both architectural and structural elements, mobile and immovable contained artworks (Lanzara et al, 2021). However, a small-scale element is a complex system composed of structural and functional elements, parts and sub-parts.…”

“…In a renovation project, actors involved in the process should be aware of the structural behaviour and mode of construction in order to determine how to intervene [25][26][27][28][29]. For this reason, a survey is carried out with a specific approach that includes the possibility of studying the morphology of the terrain, the complex geometry of the architecture, its possible transformation over time, the recognition of the decay of materials [30], and its uses [31][32][33][34]. In this way, a conceptual representation of the physical phenomena related to the building is obtained in a way that helps designers and professionals to collaborate for its recovery and maintenance [35].…”
