Documenting Immunization of Children in a Cochlear Implant Program

Abstract: It is a challenge to achieve and document immunizations recommended for cochlear implantation, even in a relatively small cochlear implant program. In our practice, those patients who were required to document immunizations before surgery had the highest rates of compliance. Access to a vaccination registry and the ability to administer vaccines in the otolaryngology office also improved compliance.

“…PCV13 vaccination rates were excluded from the intervention analysis, as the interventions extracted from the studies of interest focused on PPSV23 vaccination rates. Five interventions were analyzed, 22,24,27,28 which are described in detail in Table 2. Carpenter et al 22 had 2 separate interventions in 2 independent samples, so 2 separate improvement rates were extracted.…”

“…A full-text review of the remaining reports excluded 10 studies, leaving 13 studies for inclusion in the final data extraction and analysis. Three studies were retrospective cohort studies, [22][23][24] 4 studies were retrospective case series, [25][26][27][28] and 6 were cross-sectional studies. [29][30][31][32][33][34]…”

“…The most important factor appeared to be encouraging patients to vaccinate prior to surgery. 19 The majority of meningitis cases following cochlear implantation reported in the literature were related to S pneumoniae and H influenzae type B, two of the most common causative agents in acute bacterial otitis media. Acute otitis media is the most likely cause for meningitis beyond the first 30 days following cochlear implantation because of bacterial spread along the pathway of the electrode.…”
