Does Application of Lymphatic Drainage with Kinesiology Taping Have Any Effect on the Extent of Edema and Range of Motion in Early Postoperative Recovery following Primary Endoprosthetics of the Knee Joint?

Abstract: Background: The surgery of knee replacement due to degenerative changes is the last step of the treatment. After surgery, a major problem in patients is pain, swelling, intraarticular hematoma, and the restriction of the mobility of the joint. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of Kinesio Taping (KT) on reducing edema of the subcutaneous tissue and improving the range of motion in the joint. Methods: 82 patients were qualified for the study. After surgery, 42 patients received postoperative edema… Show more

“…Data were collected from 16 RCTs involving 842 patients, with 418 in the KT group and 424 in the control group. Eight studies were conducted on TKA cases 23,34,37,38,40-42,45 , 7 studies focused on ACLR cases 24,25,33,35,39,43,44 , and 1 study included patients undergoing IKA for meniscal repair, meniscectomy, or ligament repair 36 .…”

“…10,11,15 The three remaining studies with two intervention arms directly compared kinesiotape with standard rehabilitation to standard rehabilitation alone without kinesiotape. 12,13,16 In all of the studies, variations existed in the protocols used for delivering standard rehabilitation. Reported standard rehabilitation programs included components of early mobilization, exercises, activities of daily living training, and use of modalities (cryotherapy, electrical stimulation, massage, paraffin therapy, and laser therapy), and passive mechanical exercises using a continuous passive motion machine.…”
