Purpose Rural–urban migration has led to an increase in the community’s need for housing in the migration area. The demand for housing is getting higher while the land availability does not increase so that house prices will continue to increase. This study aims to estimate the impact of immigration on urban housing prices in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach This study examines the effect of immigration on urban housing prices at the city level in Indonesia by using 14 major cities data from 2012 to 2020 to build a panel data model. The model also incorporates urban economic conditions as control variables. Findings From the national level, the authors find that inter-regional migration has a significant and positive impact on urban housing prices. Based on the results, this paper suggested addressing the volatility of house prices through the provision of decent and affordable housing improvement to meet the growing needs and demands of the immigrant population. Research limitations/implications This study still has several limitations: the sample of cities used is not comprehensive enough, and the time period used is not long enough; the spatial impact on house prices is not taken into account, and the effect of migrant characteristics in each city has not been considered. Originality/value There is limited research on the impact of immigration on urban housing prices in city levels, especially in the case of Indonesia. In addition, recent migration is used to proxy the immigration pattern. This paper provides a valuable contribution to the empirical literature on the effect of immigration at the city level in developing countries.

Studying abroad provides students from all over the world with an exceptional opportunity to gain academic and professional experience in a different cultural environment. This article examines immigration policies and the visa application process in the context of Nigerian students studying in the Czech Republic. It examines key stages such as the pre-arrival phase, the visa process, and entry into Czech universities to gain insight into these students' motivations and barriers. It also examines the historical development of Czech immigration policy from the early 1990s to the present, highlighting legislative changes and the shift from a liberal approach to a gradual increase in control, including for third-country students and scholars as knowledge workers. The analysis also considers the difficulties of overcoming language barriers and adjusting to a new cultural environment. The study delves into the growing trend of foreign students' interest in Czech universities and emphasizes the critical factors influencing success in the migration process, such as economic factors, administrative requirements, and personal development. It concludes by questioning whether Czech migration policy is strategically prepared for the growing trend of foreign student arrivals, given the lack of key analyses of knowledge migration's impact on the Czech economy.

We compare two approaches to using information about the signs of structural shocks at specific dates within a structural vector autoregression (SVAR): imposing “narrative restrictions” (NR) on the shock signs in an otherwise set-identified SVAR; and casting the information about the shock signs as a discrete-valued “narrative proxy” (NP) to point-identify the impulse responses. The NP is likely to be “weak” given that the sign of the shock is typically known in a small number of periods, in which case the weak-proxy robust confidence intervals in Montiel Olea, Stock, and Watson are the natural approach to conducting inference. However, we show both theoretically and via Monte Carlo simulations that these confidence intervals have distorted coverage—which may be higher or lower than the nominal level—unless the sign of the shock is known in a large number of periods. Regarding the NR approach, we show that the prior-robust Bayesian credible intervals from Giacomini, Kitagawa, and Read deliver coverage exceeding the nominal level, but which converges toward the nominal level as the number of NR increases.
