Does Inoculation with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Reduce Trunk Disease in Grapevine Rootstocks?

Abstract: Ilyonectria is a weak pathogen known for causing black foot disease in young vines, infecting roots and vascular tissues at the basal end of the rootstock and restricting the movement of water and nutrients. This negatively impacts vine establishment during transplant into the vineyard. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are symbiotic fungi that associate with most plants and have been shown to mitigate the infection and effect of pathogens. This greenhouse study was designed to determine if the mycorrhizal fun… Show more

“…Glomus intradices ), from Glomeraceae, reduced the disease severity and incidence of root lesions caused by black-foot pathogens on Vitis rupestris [ 86 ]. By contrast, the application of commercial AMF as a pre-planting strategy against black-foot fungi did not result in the suppression of disease incidence, but instead increased the abundance of the pathogens [ 87 ].…”

“…Moreover, AMF protect grapevines grown in controlled conditions against pathogens through stimulation of key genes of the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis in leaves ( Bruisson et al, 2016 ) and inhibit their transmission by impairing the growth of nematode vectors in roots and their reproduction in soils ( Hao et al, 2018 ). Although it is widely accepted that AMF-grapevine association improves grapevine growth and mineral uptake in vineyards ( Trouvelot et al, 2015 ), contradictory results were recently reported when studying the protective role of the symbiosis against pathogens such as Ilyonectria ( Holland et al, 2019 ). Similarly, AMF inoculation may affect berry primary and secondary metabolism in response to environmental stresses when grapevines were cultivated under controlled conditions ( Torres et al, 2016 , 2018c ) but little is known about their effect under natural conditions.…”
