Ambient ozone (O 3 ) poses a growing threat to the global ecosystems due to its high phytotoxicity: it may possibly reduce the productivity of wild plants as well as the species' biodiversity. Asia hosts a remarkable number of wild plant species; thus, studies dealing with Asian species' responses to O 3 are of great importance. We have retrieved, from scientific databases, 195 papers dealing with the response of 473 wild plants species to O 3 . Some species we characterize as "ozonophobic" have been reported to be negatively affected by O 3 , even at O 3 levels lower than the AOT40 threshold. This review revealed the lack of research dealing with the effects of O 3 on endangered or threatened plant species, as well as on important medical plants. Such research is needed not only from an ecological point of view or in terms of biodiversity value, but also from an anthropocentric point of view. Several wild species carry unique substances that are used in medicines for healing human diseases or in agro-industry for the production of agrochemicals, thus securing human welfare.

Abstract.-Most of species from the worldwide distributed Plantago genus are greatly used as herbal medicines. Phytochemical investigations of various Plantago organs (leaves, stems) reveal their high potential to produce a wide array of bioactive secondary metabolites. So, in vitro cultures of Plantago species are managed in order to deliberately restrict the ecological factors and then to control the culture conditions. Experimental culture parameters of Plantago species, i.e. seed germination, temperature, relative humidity, light, substrates and additional nutritive solutions as well as the in vitro culture media and growth regulators are reviewed. The expensive optimizations of in vitro culture and biotransformation processes are reported. Changes in the concentration and the pattern of bioactive polyphenol compounds synthesized from in vitro cultures are discussed in the examined species of the genus Plantago in order to conclude about their potential interest as future drug candidates.Key words : plantain -Plantaginaceae -in vitro culture -polyphenol -biotransformation -medicine.Résumé.-La plupart des espèces du genre cosmopolite Plantago sont largement utilisées en médecine traditionnelle. Des études phytochimiques sur les différents organes des plantains (feuilles, tiges) révèlent leur fort potentiel à produire un large spectre de molécules biologiquement actives. Les techniques de cultures in vitro des espèces du genre Plantago se sont alors développées afin de restreindre les facteurs écologiques et de maîtriser les conditions culturales. Les paramètres expérimentaux de culture tels que la germination des graines, la température, l'humidité relative, la lumière, la nature des substrats et des solutions nutritives ainsi que la composition chimique des milieux de culture in vitro et les régulateurs de croissance additionnels ont été passés en revue. Les coû-teuses méthodes d'optimisation des cultures in vitro et les procédés de biotransformation ont été rapportés. Les variations qualitatives et quantitatives des biomolécules de nature polyphénolique synthétisées par cultures in vitro de Plantago ont été argumentées, espèce par espèce, afin de définir l'intérêt théra-peutique potentiel de chacune.Mots clés : plantain -Plantaginaceae -culture in vitro -polyphenol -biotransformation -médecine.

Ozone concentrations are expected to rise in developing countries, potentially reducing crop yield and causing great economic losses. Therefore, an ozone biomonitoring system based on the ratio of the biomass of ozone‐resistant (NC‐R) and ozone‐sensitive (NC‐S) biotypes of white clover (Trifolium repens cv. Regal) is tested over 2 years (2012 and 2013) at four sites with neighboring crop production in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC), Brazil. The biomass production of both clones is similar at the four sites studied in the MRC, but significant differences are observed between the monthly harvests during the experimental period. Linear regression analyses show contrasting results from the experimental years. During 2012, the biomass of both clones correlated positively with precipitation and relative humidity, and negatively with vapor pressure deficit, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone. During 2013, the biomass production of both clones did not significantly correlate with oscillating environmental conditions. No significant linear regression between the NC‐S/NC‐R biomass ratio and ozone is found in either year. A stepwise backward multilinear method identified nitrogen dioxide and accumulated dose over a threshold of 40 ppb (AOT40) as the main parameters negatively affecting the biomasses of both clones; particulate matter affected only the sensitive clone. This field experiment shows that the current concentrations of ozone may affect sensitive Brazilian crops.
