Does religion affect international trade in services more than trade in goods?

Abstract: This study used gravity modelling to examine the impact of religion on international trade in goods and services. The Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimator was used to correct for the presence of heteroscedasticity, and religion-related dummy variables were incorporated to investigate the relationship between religion and trade. The results indicate that religion creates positive institutional and network effects, increasing international trade in goods and services; these effects enhance trade in servic… Show more

“…As indicated by prior research, consumers' attitudes have been significantly affected by religious dogmas and they are strongly inclined to do business with companies that respect and or promote their religious values (Lee, 2013;Mokhlis, 2009). Furthermore, corporations and business entities, particularly foreign companies, should avoid using images, logos and promotional materials that could be seen as offensive to religion and beliefs.…”

“…Четвертый канал влияния основан на сходстве религиозных ценностей как стимула двусторонней торговли стран (Helble, 2007;Kang, Fratianni, 2006), в то время как различия приводят к снижению объемов торговли (Linders, de Groot, 2006;Lee, 2013). Сходство религиозных норм способствуют доверию и сотрудничеству между торговыми партнерами одной религиозной общины (Tan, 2006), что обусловлено созданием общих норм и институтов (Lee, 2013).…”

“…Therefore, we estimate our gravity equations using the Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimator Santos Silva and Tenreyro (2003) proposed. The PPML estimator is robust even in the presence of heteroskedasticity, and most relevant papers use PPML as the primary estimator of the gravity equation (Lee, 2013;Saslavsky & Shepherd, 2013;Yadav, 2014;Zaninović et al, 2020;Zajc Kejžar et al, 2022;Kern et al, 2021).…”
