Does routinely collected patient-reported outcome data represent the actual case-mix of elective coronary revascularization patients?

Abstract: Routinely collected PROs in cardiac patients may be biased towards younger and healthier patients. This needs to be recognized when evaluating the representativeness of such data. The routine collection of these data should be adequately resourced.

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to compare the performance of the 15D with the instruments included in the ICHOM standard set in CAD patients who have received OMT or undergone PCI, or CABG in a routine care setting. Another strength of our study is the utilization of the 15D instrument to measure generic HRQoL as it has been found to have higher discriminatory power and better validity in the disease area of heart disease than some other generic instruments [ 10 , 11 , 32 , 33 ].…”

“…Routinely collected PRO data may not present the actual patient case-mix and may be biased towards younger and healthier patients [32]. A limitation of our study is that we did not have data on those patients who declined to answer the questionnaires at the baseline and, therefore, it is possible, that the studied patient population may not represent the actual casemix of those treated.…”

“…Only patients with both physician-and self-reported CCS scores were included. The response rate in an earlier study in patients scheduled for elective angiography and PCI in the Kuopio University Hospital was circa 40% [13]. Typically, the most comorbid and oldest patients are least prone to answer surveys [12].…”
