Does tamsulosin increase stone clearance after shockwave lithotripsy of renal stones? A prospective, randomized controlled study

Abstract: Tamsulosin significantly increases stone clearance after SWL of renal stones. It decreases the pain and amount of analgesics needed, with a low rate of side-effects.

“…In the study by Gravina et al [14] the stone clearance at 3 months was in favor of tamsulosin (78 vs. 60%, p = 0.04) following a single session of SWL. Similarly in another study, the expulsion rate at 3 months was significantly higher in tamsulosin group (73 vs. 55%, p = 0.008) [15].…”

“…Tamsulosin, terazosin, and doxazosin have all been reported to be equally efficacious in ureteral stone expulsion, as well as in reducing the intensity of ureteral colic. Among these agents, tamsulosin has been heavily studied as an adjunct therapy after SWL for ureteral and renal stones [13][14][15][16].…”

“…8 Park, et al concluded that in a single proximal ureteral stone tamsulosin helps in the earlier clearance of stone fragments and reduces the expulsion period of stone fragments after ESWL. 9 Hussein, et al in a prospective randomized controlled study concluded that tamsulosin significantly increases stone clearance after SWL of renal stones. 10 It decreases the pain and amount of analgesics needed, with a low rate of side-effects.…”

“…There are several trials showing better outcomes after SWL plus medical expulsive therapy (MET) with tamsulosin. A randomized controlled trial published in 2010 including 166 patients after SWL of renal calculi showed signifi cantly improved stone free rates at 3 months after using tamsulosin and diclofenac compared to diclofenac alone (73 % versus 55 %) [ 13 ]. Another randomized controlled trial found a signifi cant decrease in the time to stone passage in the group treated with tamsulosin compared to the placebo group [ 14 ].…”
