Does the Arc of Science Bend Towards Impact? Four Decades of Empirical Research Published in JADD Since the DSM-III

Abstract: The present study explored the shift from understanding to intervention to population impact in the empirical research published in this journal at five points of time over 40 years since the release of DSM-III. Two-thirds of the more than 600 original studies identified involved basic research, a pattern that is consistent with previous analyses of research funding allocations and that did not change over time. One of every eight studies involved intervention research, which occurred in community-based progra… Show more

“…This prognostic study sought to define an ecologically valid approach for identifying objective indicators of impending aggressive behaviors in youths with autism who were psychiatric inpatients. Our results suggest that biosensor data and machine learning have the potential to redress an intractable problem for a sizable segment of the autism population who are understudied and underserved . Our findings may lay the groundwork for developing just-in-time adaptive intervention mobile health systems that may enable new opportunities for preemptive intervention.…”

“…In their important review Odom and colleagues note the major areas of advance in this area as well as the important gaps in translation of research into clinical practice in school and home settings. Finally, the recognition of autism as a diagnostic concept has raised important issues of social policy for local, state, national, and international planning (Doehring, 2021). In the final article in this series of papers, Doehring discusses the important challenges in the areas of science, ethics, and social policy.…”
