Does the Oral-Anal Transit Test Correlate with Colonic Manometry Findings in Children with Refractory Constipation?

Abstract: Purpose: The Oral-anal Transit Test (OTT) is a simple method of obtaining information about colonic transit. We aim to assess the correlation of OTT with the neuromuscular integrity of the colon determined by colonic manometry (CM). Methods: All patients who had OTT followed by CM were evaluated. Less than 6 of 24 markers remaining on OTT was considered normal. CM was performed per previously published guidelines. A normal CM was defined as at least one High Amplitude Propagating Contraction progressing from t… Show more

“…Study by Dranove et al (32) on 34 children showed that CTT (authors used the oral-anal transit test) is a good tool to rule out slow transit constipation, but one should plan further investigations to assess for the location of segmental dysmotility, especially if surgical treatment is considered.…”

“…Although this test could provide directions for diagnosis and treatment, the way is not straight. And, in some patients who do not respond to conventional medical therapy or cannot taper the medicine, further studies are required to investigate the roles of outlet function, which includes the pelvic floor and puborectalis muscle, sigmoid colon, and anorectum, and slow transit, which includes the entire colon except the sigmoid colon [ 5 6 7 8 ].…”

“…Most recent studies on pediatric constipation have conducted aggressive tests, such as entire colon manometry, after a simple brief study without the evaluation of anorectal outlet function [ 8 ]. However, considering the frequency of the underlying diseases, feasibility of examination, and treatment in pediatric patients, it is reasonable to evaluate outlet function before aggressive end-stage studies, such as entire colon manometry.…”

“…To our knowledge, there are only three studies that have evaluated the relationship between OTT and CM [5,10,13] outcome of the CM study. We aimed to study the correlation of OTT (SITZMARKS) with CM in a larger sample size, compare the results of OTT, ARM, and CM, and determine the outcomes of treatment changes that were made based on the results of CM.…”
