Dog owner's accuracy measuring different volumes of dry dog food using three different measuring devices

Abstract: Prior research demonstrates significant inaccuracy when repeatedly measuring the same amount of dry dog food using a dry-food measuring cup, bringing into question the accuracy of measuring devices. This study aimed to determine dog owners’ accuracy when measuring different volumes of dry dog food using different types of measuring devices. One hundred dog owners, randomly assigned one of three measuring devices (a one-cup dry-food measuring cup, a two-cup graduated-liquid measuring cup or a two-cup commercial… Show more

“…Previous studies on household measuring instruments have cited the glassware as having varied accuracy even between repeat measures with the same instrument. 24 Therefore, because of this possible mass error and the error associated with the accuracy of other at-home titration instruments, this titration may be subjected to a certain degree of uncertainty.…”

“…This may indicate that supplementing with other types of food ameliorates the more obesogenic consequences of certain diets. The relationship between dry food and increased BCS may be partially due to the tendency of owners to inaccurately measure dry food portions (21), which may be alleviated by the decreased caloric density of fresh and raw foods. We posit that previous studies did not identify a relationship between dry food and increased body weight due to the lack of fresh and raw alternatives commercially available in past years.…”

“…Calculating the food allotment is a simple equation: The most accurate way to measure the food allotment is by using a gram scale, and not by scoop or cup. 30,95 Encouraging pet owners to use a gram scale and demonstrating how to properly use the scale can be an effective component in the prevention of obesity.…”
