Doing space in face-to-face interaction and on interactive multimodal platforms

Abstract: In this article, we argue that the spatial environment of everyday interaction has to be understood as a social construct. Co-participants in an interaction make use of the spatial affordances of the interactional architecture around them, and at the same time they interactionally create and maintain spatial configurations. In that sense, they can be argued to be "doing space". Concerning face-to-face interaction, we distinguish between heavily structured material settings that are custom-built for specific ty… Show more

“…Face-to-face interaction has more positive effects on well-being in many domains when compared with Internet-mediated social interaction, in providing social support, social belongingness or social involvement and emotions (Jucker et al, 2018;Kafetsios et al, 2017;Kim, 2017). Internetmediated interaction lacks immediacy, and cues arising from body language, gestures in place and a limited sharing experience (Kafetsios et al, 2017).…”

“…As far as space and spatiality are concerned, we have accordingly to assume that space (in whatever characterization) is a communicative construction in the strict sense: Being a crucial part of the speech situation's localities (as components of the participants' here), space and spatiality are constantly brought about through the participants' perception, movements, and actions in terms of co-orientation, coordination, and cooperation. This is the meaning of "doing space" as it has been introduced with respect to the communicative construction of space(s) across different media and settings (Jucker et al 2018).…”

“…Out of the 132 articles, 8 relied on a pre-collected dataset. Only one of these articles addressed ethical concerns (Jucker et al, 2018). This suggests that authors assumed that for datasets compiled prior to the research project an ethical discussion in the article is unnecessary.…”
