Dominant dimer emission provides colour stability for red thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitter

Abstract: 4DTPIPN has a strong tendency for dimer formation, even in dilute film, and possesses a higher colour purity than 4CzIPN but this is traded-off against the photoluminescence quantum yield. (Credit to LeStudio/Shutterstock for the James Bond themed background.)

“…As a typical course, a red-shift of emission peaks is observed with increasing the doping load, usually ascribed to solid-state solvation 73,76 or the emergence of dimer states. 75,77,78 Solid-state solvation, in this case, may occur when a nonpolar host (e.g. CBP with D GS = 0) is used with a highly polar TADF dopant, leading to a molar stabilized CT emission at a high doping load.…”

“…This comparison is done using a selection of excitations with diverse symmetries and CT amplitudes in order to give a concise analysis of how D CT , A D CT , and EM D CT handle possible scenarios that might arise when dealing with charge transfer excitations. With the exception of the p -nitro- N , N -dimethylaniline series, all examined structures are taken from previous works within our group and are known to display either TADF or SOCT-ISC (Figure , full names can be found in the Supporting Information, Section S1). The final section of this article is dedicated to the analysis of other widely used CT indicators with respect to the ones that are already discussed.…”

“…The excitation of push–pull dyes involves intramolecular charge transfer [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. The push–pull dye 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene (4CzIPN) [ 18 , 19 , 20 ] has been successfully utilized in OLEDs [ 21 , 22 , 23 ] and as photocatalysts for organic reactions [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ], the hydrogen photoevolution reaction [ 29 ], and CO 2 photoreduction [ 30 , 31 ].…”
