Dopamine-Mediated Zwitterionic Polyelectrolyte-Coated Polypropylene Hernia Mesh with Synergistic Anti-inflammation Effects

Abstract: Over 20 million ventral hernia repairs are performed worldwide annually and only a minority (<10%) of cases are not mesh-based. However, even polypropylene (PP), endorsed as the "gold standard" of all prosthetic materials used in this field, is still subject to many complications caused by the foreign body reaction (FBR). Here, we describe the buildup of dopamine-mediated zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) coatings to inhibit nonspecific protein adsorption. Based on the universal adhesive abi… Show more

“…This is the typical color of oxidant catechol, such as DA, after oxidized polymerization. 14 The existence of P and N elements in PMAD@TA/Fe-PP also implied the immobilization of PMAD on layer I and a stable cross-linked layer I at the same time. In summary, alkalicatalyzed oxidation was not only important for the stability of the assembled structure but also influenced PMAD immobilization.…”

“…PMAD, as the outer layer, always protects the intermediate layer of TA/Fe from oxidation, and catechol groups of PMAD also have antioxidant abilities. 14,39 Although there was a quick loss of antioxidant ability in the first 3 days, the property remained at 61.6% of the original value at 7 days, showing good antioxidant durability. The reason for the quick decrease in the first 3 days was supposedly the oxidation of surficial polyphenols of PMAD-TA/Fe and the loss of PMAD, but the second aryloxy radical coupling can be induced.…”
