Dormitory of Physical and Engineering Sciences: Sleeping Beauties May Be Sleeping Innovations

Abstract: A ‘Sleeping Beauty in Science’ is a publication that goes unnoticed (‘sleeps’) for a long time and then, almost suddenly, attracts a lot of attention (‘is awakened by a prince’). The aim of this paper is to present a general methodology to investigate (1) important properties of Sleeping Beauties such as the time-dependent distribution, author characteristics, journals and fields, and (2) the cognitive environment of Sleeping Beauties. We are particularly interested to find out to what extent Sleeping Beauties… Show more

“…SBs in pediatrics are rare. Their prevalence is approximately 0.011%, which is comparable to the prevalence of SBs in physics [4]. It seems that some environments or periods are more ''SB fertile'' than others: 3 of 5 SBs were published in the journal Pediatrics, 4 originated from the United States, and 4 were published in the period from 1992 to 1993.…”

“…However, other dynamics are also possible: a more or less long period of non-recognition with low citations is followed by a period with high citations after a sudden peak. Such a dynamic is typical for the phenomenon named "sleeping beauty" (van Raan, 2004), "for publications whose importance is not recognized for several years after publication" (Ke, Ferrara, Radicchi, & Flammini, 2015b, p. 7426).…”

“…A discussion of these bibliometric mapping methods can be found in van Raan (2015) and also in the next section. CWTS played a pioneering role in this mapping methodology by creating a time-series of co-word and co-classification based maps for the entire technological domain Noyons et al, 1991).…”
