Dose Optimization of Potassium (K) for Yield and Quality Increment of Strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa Duch) Chandler

Abstract: Aims: Strawberry, being introduced recently to the fruit industry of Pakistan, is a new commodity therefore the growers are still unaware of the optimum fertilizer dose needed to obtain better yield. To achieve this goal the present research study was designed to optimize the proper dose of Potassium (K) for strawberry under the agro-climatic conditions of Peshawar-Pakistan.

“…Moreover, the content of chlorophyll in leaves, translocation of metabolites in plants from source to sink resulted in improved and better fruit growth in the form of fruit size, fruit number, fruit weight, and ultimately fruit yield ( Reetika et al, 2018 ). Many scientists have also investigated the effect of K on date fruit, concluding that K plays a critical role in enhancing date palm fruit weight and productivity ( Osman, 2010 , Ahmad et al, 2014 , Shekofteh and Nick-Pour, 2016 ). The improved, reducing sugars in the fruit can be the effect of K combined with urea as both of these encouraged hydrolysis of starch to convert into sugars ( Jat and Kacha, 2014 ).…”

“…Others researches also reported that optimal potassium supply maximizes yield of tomato [47] and strawberry [48]. The study results of Zelelew et al [49] showed that potassium had significant effect on potato growth.…”

“…Under potassium starvation or salt stress, K + is released from the vacuole providing K + homeostasis in the cytoplasm, as well as for the cellular maintenance of turgor, enzyme activation and membrane potential (Fontes et al, 2011; Nieves-Cordones et al, 2014). Adequate K nutrition greatly influences the synthesis of sucrose and starch in plants such as apple (Mosa et al, 2015), muskmelon (Lester et al, 2010), tomato (Almeselmani et al, 2010) and strawberry (Ahmad et al, 2014). However, K levels have different effects on organic acid metabolism depending on the plant species (Etienne et al, 2014; Flores et al, 2015; Niu et al, 2016).…”
