Double or hybrid diabetes: A systematic review on disease prevalence, characteristics and risk factors

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide epidemic affecting the health of millions of people. While type 1 diabetes (T1D) is caused by autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, type 2 diabetes (T2D) results from a combination of insulin resistance and beta cell insulin secretory defect. Clear definition and diagnosis of these two types of diabetes has been increasing more and more difficult, leading to the inclusion of a new category, namely double or hybrid diabetes (DD) that demonst… Show more

“…DM is a group of chronic metabolic diseases characterized by persistently increased blood glucose levels [ 64 ] resulting from defects in insulin secretion, loss of insulin responsiveness, or both [ 65 ]. Commonly DM is classified into two main types, type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 (T2DM).…”

“…Insulin resistance is common to both T1D and T2D, although its pathophysiology seems to be different in youth with T1D, as compared to those with T2D [ 36 ]. The simultaneous presence of insulin resistance and T1D has been defined as “hybrid or double diabetes” and patients with T1D and insulin resistance own a more elevated CV risk among patients with T1D [ 37 ]. The control of other abnormalities associated with diabetes is of paramount importance.…”

“…Since precise definition and diagnosis of type 1 and type 2 diabetes has become more difficult and very challenging, a new category of diabetes termed double or hybrid diabetes has been introduced. Double diabetes possesses symptoms of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes including obesity, insulin resistance, type of latent autoimmune diabetes in youth (LADY) autoantibodies (namely GAD56, IA2), and insulin antibodies [ 12 ].…”
