Drinking carrot juice increases total antioxidant status and decreases lipid peroxidation in adults

Abstract: BackgroundHigh prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular disease is attributable to sedentary lifestyle and eating diets high in fat and refined carbohydrate while eating diets low in fruit and vegetables. Epidemiological studies have confirmed a strong association between eating diets rich in fruits and vegetables and cardiovascular health. The aim of this pilot study was to determine whether drinking fresh carrot juice influences antioxidant status and cardiovascular risk markers in subjects not modifying the… Show more

“…For instance, in a study, hypertensive subjects showed a remarkable decrease in blood pressure after the 12-week consumption of vegetable juice [34]. Furthermore, a pilot study was conducted to discover whether blood pressure was influenced by drinking fresh carrot juice, and results showed that SBP decreased ( p = 0.06), but not DBP [51]. …”

“…Carrot juice not only contain many important dietary components such as vitamins, minerals and fiber, but also are considered as one of the richest sources of bioactive compounds that benefit human health (Demir et al, 2004). Dral intake of carrot juice also displays other beneficial physiological effects including reduced DNA damage, increased levels of antioxidants and reduced inflammation (Potter et al, 2011).…”

“…For example, drinking carrot juice induces antioxidant activity and reduces lipid peroxidation and can decrease levels of CVD risk markers in adults. In addition, carrot juice intake reduces systolic blood pressure [41]. Carrot juice consumption also improved glucose tolerance and hepatic structure and function, which might be associated with the effect of anthocyanins seen in metabolic syndrome [40,42].…”
