Drop-Casted Self-Assembling Graphene Oxide Membranes for Scanning Electron Microscopy on Wet and Dense Gaseous Samples

Abstract: Graphene oxide sheets dispersed in water and many other solvents can spontaneously assemble into a surface film covering an evaporating droplet due to their amphiphilicity. Thus, graphene oxide membranes with controllable thickness suspended over an orifice have been directly fabricated using a simple drop-cast approach. Mechanical properties and electron transparency tests of these membranes show their use as electron transparent, but molecularly impenetrable, windows for environmental electron microscopy in … Show more

“…3.4 ) [ 123 ]. An ionic liquid (1-(3-aminopropyl)-3-methylmidazolium bromide, RNH 2 ) was attached to GO via the end amine group in a nucleophilic attack of the epoxy groups [ 124 ]. Another example involved 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) attachment onto epoxy via a S N 2 reaction and of course ring opening of epoxy groups, while reinforcement in the mechanical properties of the resulted silica composite was demonstrated [ 125 ].…”

“…22,45 As for drop coating and spray coating, the main process of thin GO lm formation is dripping or spraying GO dispersion on horizontal substrates and drying aerward. 68 Gilje et al 69 spray-coated GO onto SiO 2 substrate in which the prepared GO lm is more uniform than that of drop-coating. Then, they chemical reduced the GO lm with hydrazine at 80 C. Dip coating is another traditional lm preparation method, in which the substrate should be withdrawn vertically from the container.…”

“…rGO could be synthesized in large quantities from inexpensive reagents using simple chemical approaches. 20 It readily exfoliates to thin sheets in water, segregates at the water-air interface upon solvent evaporation, 21 and could be easily processed into continuous paper-like lms. 22,23 Properties of rGO, such as conductivity, tensile strength, etc., strongly depend on the degree of GO reduction, 24,25 which means that they could be nely tuned by the reduction conditions.…”
