Drug Resistance Patterns and Trends in Patients with Suspected Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Dalian, China: A Retrospective Study

Abstract: Purpose The emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) represents a threat to the control of tuberculosis. This study aimed to estimate the patterns and trends of DR-TB in patients with suspected DR-TB. In addition, risk factors for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) were identified among suspected DR-TB patients in Dalian, China. Patients and Methods A total of 5661 patients with suspected DR-TB from Jan 1, 2013 to Dec 31, 2020 were included in the final a… Show more

“…The emergency of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) has threatened global public health efforts to control TB [3,4]. China has the third-highest burden of MTB in the world [5], in particular a significant increase in DR-TB, which severely impacts treatment outcomes [6]. The timely diagnosis and treatment of TB, particularly DR-TB, contributes to controlling the transmission of the disease [2].…”

“…Located in East China, Nanjing is an ancient capital with a relatively developed economy and profound cultural heritage. In Nanjing, studies have shown that the total rate of DR-TB during 2017–2020 was 32.7% [ 28 ], lower than that during 2002–2014 (49.53 ± 8.57%) [ 29 ] but still higher than that in the areas of Hainan (24.9%) [ 30 ], Dalian (29.59%) [ 31 ] and Hangzhou (23.82%) [ 32 ] in China. At the same time, a meta-analysis also noted out that the prevalence of any drug resistance among new and retreatment cases was significantly higher in eastern China than in other regions of China [ 33 ].…”

“…The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed a strategy to eliminate TB, which was to reduce TB mortality to less than 95% and incidence to 90% by 2035 [2]. However, the emergence of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) has seriously hindered the prevention and treatment of TB [3]. DR-TB is now becoming the world's deadliest pathogen, with a quarter of deaths attributed to antimicrobial drug resistance [4].…”
