Dry Eye Syndrome Risks in Patients With Fibromyalgia

Abstract: The coexistence of fibromyalgia (FM) and dry eye syndrome (DES) has been previously reported. However, there are few studies on how patients with FM may develop concomitant DES. Patients with chronic widespread pain, like FM, chronic fatigue syndrome, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), was concerned for the rheumatic or psychosomatic disorders which might adequately reflect the long-term risk of DES.We retrieved data on FM patients from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan covering the ye… Show more

“…Little is known about the risk factors influencing chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) following dry eye syndrome (DES) [ 1 – 8 ]. A previous study has shown that most patients with DES were classified as having spectrum diseases, such as fibromyalgia (FM) [ 9 ], and that DES was related to FM, even among FM patients without comorbidities (1.40-fold risk) [ 9 ]. Furthermore, CFS has been shown to overlap with FM as well as other rheumatology diseases, such as Sjögren syndrome (SS) [ 10 ].…”

“…Furthermore, environmental factors such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), and temperature were positively associated with dry eye disease, while relative humidity was negatively related [39]. In Taiwan, several studies revealed that osteoporosis, asthma, fibromyalgia, gout, presbyopia and the increased use of glaucoma medications have increased the risk of developing dry eye disease [40][41][42][43][44][45]. In terms of autoimmune rheumatic diseases, one population-based cohort study also shows that patients with palindromic rheumatism had an increased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, polymyositis and dermatomyositis [46].…”
