Dry Matter Accumulation and Nutrient Uptake by Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under Poplar (Populus deltoides) Based Agroforestry System

Abstract: Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) being grown with association of boundary plantations of poplar (Populus deltoides M.) has to face competition for water and nutrients uptake. Field experiment was carried to study the dry matter accumulation pattern and nutrients uptake by wheat grown in association with boundary plantations of three-and four-year-old poplar plants under irrigated condition. Dry matter accumulation of wheat declined considerably due to presence of poplar tree line during all the growth stages as co… Show more

“…The samples were separated into shoots and head which dried at 70 O C. Total nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were determined in the digested solution according to the method described by Cottenie et al, (1982). N, P, and K uptake were calculated separately by the following formula: Nutrient uptake in kg fed -1 = Nutrient % in seed or straw*dry matter of grain or straw in kg fed -1 /100 (Sharma, et al 2012)…”

“…Maximum dry weight under open system was recorded in UP 2572 (52.1 g/plant) which was significantly superior to rest of the wheat varieties while in poplar system it was highest in PBW 373 (42.9 g/plant) which was at par with DBW 711. Sharma et al (2012) reported that the dry matter accumulation of wheat declined considerably due to presence of poplar tree line during all the growth stages as compared to pure crop. Under open system, longest root length (15.8 cm) was recorded with PBW 373 that was significantly superior to rest of the varieties while in poplar system root length was not influenced significantly.…”
