Dual Circularly Polarized Reflectarray With Independent Control of Polarizations

Abstract: A reflectarray with independent dual-circular polarizations is proposed for the first time. The reflector panel operates in X-band and contains 97 unit-cells. It is made with a lego-type configuration allowing changing manually the phase aperture distribution and demonstrating experimentally the independence of both polarizations in the same frequency band. To this end, various beam pointing directions are selected in righthand and left-hand polarizations. The achieved bandwidth is 790 MHz (9.4% at the center … Show more

“…Reflectarrays in multifunction integration such as multiband [1,2] and multipolarization [3,4] are in urgent needs for space communication with advantages in high capacity and low cost. Meanwhile, antenna operating in circular polarization (CP) is advantageous for extreme environments since it eliminates the polarization mismatch and restrains multipath interference.…”

“…The single-layer multiresonance broadband CP reflectarray has been proposed reaching more than 30% antenna bandwidth in [6]. The dual-CP reflectarray with independent control in the identical frequency was firstly researched in [3] based on the circular polarization selective surface (CPSS) cell.…”

“…The polarization performance of circularly polarized reflectarrays depends critically on the polarization purity of the feed. 1 Due to well-known advantages, such as, small size, light weight, compactness, and low cost, microstrip arrays can be used in satellite-based communication systems as reflectarray feeds. However, they are also known to exhibit narrow axial ratio and impedance bandwidths.…”

“…In [20], a dual-CP reflectarray is obtained by using a dual-surface reflector and polarizer which converts the LP waves to CP waves. One dual-CP reflectarray that can steer its beam to 21 o with independent control was reported in [21]. In this design, Dual-CP operation was achieved by placing one left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and one right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) selective surfaces at different layers separated by an air gap, which results in a complicated structure and high profile.…”
