Dual-Mechanism Tuned Engineered Polyphenols with Cascade Photocatalytic Self-Fenton Reaction for Sustainable Biocidal Coatings

Ting Du,
Shaochi Wang,
Jianxing Feng
et al.

Abstract: Traditional disposable personal protective equipment (PPE) only blocks pathogenic bacteria by mechanical filtration, with the risk of recontamination and transmission remaining. Herein, inspired by phenolic-enabled nanotechnology (PEN), we proposed engineered polyphenol coatings by plant-derived aromatic aldehydes and metal involvement, denoted as FQM, to obtain the desired photocatalysis-self-Fenton antibacterial performance. Experiments and theoretical analysis proved the dual mechanism of Fe-induced enhance… Show more

“…The above experimental results show that the main kind of free radical generated by the reaction is O 2 ·– . To further demonstrate the underlying mechanism for the outstanding peroxidase-like activity of FM, the DFT calculations were performed, which were desired to support antimicrobial theory studies. , The detail computational methods are offered in the experimental section. Figure a introduces the differential charge density of H 2 O 2 molecules adsorbed on FM and indicates that H 2 O 2 prefers to adsorb in the vicinity of a FM molecule with an adsorption energy of −2.21 eV .…”

“…With the improvement in living standards, people’s demand for the variety and quality of fresh fruit is also increasing. However, the fruits are inevitably damaged and spoilt in the process from the production area to the sale place due to the microbial infection, resulting in great economic loss and severe resource waste. , Packaging can effectively inhibit the growth of microorganisms by the properties of antimicrobial, isolating the oxygen and water required by microorganisms, thus extending the shelf life of fruits. The problems of low antimicrobial ability and excessive consumption of petrochemical resources caused by mainstream plastic packaging have drawn growing concern. To counter these drawbacks, natural polysaccharide packaging films incorporated with natural active substances (essential oils and phenolic/flavonoid compounds, etc.)…”

“…1−3 Foodborne pathogens are widely polluted, spread swiftly, and do excellent harm, which has a great impact on human health and the economy and has turned out to be a premier public health problem in the world. 4,5 Among them, Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) is a particularly notorious intestinal pathogen, which is associated with the outbreak of numerous foodborne diseases. 6,7 The incidence rate of S. typhimurium ranks first among Salmonella infections and S. typhimurium can induce nosocomial infection and fulminant food poisoning with a high fatality rate.…”
