Dual Responsive Pectin Hydrogels and Their Silver Nanocomposites: Swelling Studies, Controlled Drug Delivery and Antimicrobial Applications

Abstract: Novel dual responsive pectin hydrogels composed from poly(acrylamidoglycolic acid-co-vinylcaprolactam)/ Pectin (PAV-PC) and also PAV-PC hydrogels are used as templates for the production of silver nanoparticles. 5-Fluorouracil is an anticancer drug and has been loaded in situ into PAV-PC hydrogels. Structure and morphology characterization of PAV-PC hydrogels were investigated by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermo gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction studies, … Show more

“…The intriguing properties of SNPs and the wide range technological interests have been an ever increasing stimulus to fully focus on specialized applications such as electrochemical sensors [35], biomedical materials, optics, and microelectronics [36]. Recently, pectin mediated synthesis of stabilized SNPs and dual responsive pectin hydrogels were prepared in sort of drug delivery applications [37]. It is certainly better to use mild plant mediated biosynthesis of nanoparticles and it is gaining importance due to advancement in chemical and physical methods, as the green approach does not involve high pressure and energy and toxic chemicals [38].…”

“…It is obtained by waste utilization of citrus fruits. Pectin‐based products can enhance the recovery process by pectin's ability to adsorb exudate and they are widely used in wound care and treatment mostly by its biocompatibility and gelling capability . Pectin creates an oxygen and moisture permeable media; also, it has antimicrobial properties which increase pectin's use in medical applications.…”

“…This property will ultimately improve the cytotoxic activity of drugs against cancer cells and reduce their toxicity on normal cells, which is are desirable characteristics for cancer targeted drug delivery [ 145 ]. Besides, polysaccharide-based AuNPs revealed desirable optical, electrical and chemical properties, which enabled to display high-amplitude photoacoustic signals in the cancer cells, suggesting promising potential in photoacoustic image-guided drug release and synergistic chemo-photoacoustic therapy [ 142 , 146 ]. Much evidence suggests that there are many receptors on the cell surface, which are responsible for the interaction between PMNPs and the microenvironment around the cells [ 147 ].…”
