Dual specificity phosphatase 6 suppresses the growth and metastasis of prostate cancer cells

Abstract: Dual specificity phosphatase 6 (DUSP6) is expressed at low levels in numerous types of human cancer. The loss of DUSP6 plays a pivotal role in tumor progression; however, the role of DUSP6 in prostate cancer remains unclear. In this study, in vitro invasion assays and in vivo metastasis experiments were used to investigate the effects of DUSP6 on prostate cancer cell invasion and metastasis. Furthermore, in vitro growth and soft agar assays and in vivo growth experiments were performed to determine the functio… Show more

“…Prostate cancer is a rather common disease threatening the health of older males [ 30 ]. Global statistics show that, in 2008, the standardized morbidity and mortality rates of this cancer were 82.5/100,000 and 7.5/100,000, respectively [ 31 33 ].…”

“…Global statistics show that, in 2008, the standardized morbidity and mortality rates of this cancer were 82.5/100,000 and 7.5/100,000, respectively [ 31 33 ]. The incidence of the disease was relatively low in China previously, but in recent years we have seen an increase in its incidence and mortality [ 30 ]. At present, no effective treatment method has been introduced for advanced-stage prostate cancer.…”

“…At current, 38 DUSP family members are known, and 11 use MAP kinases as substrate; of those, only DUSP6 displays high selectivity for ERK1/2, the others are promiscuity towards JNK, p38 or ERK [ 15 ]. Dusp6 is expressed in multiple tissues, with highest expression in the brain [ 16 ], adipose tissue [ 17 ], heart and pancreas [ 15 ] and has been implicated in multiple physiological processes ranging from brain development [ 18 ] and heart function [ 19 ] to tumorigenesis [ 20 22 ].…”

“…Prostate cancer is a disease that affects older males, and is one of the most common malignant tumors amongst males in Europe (1). Previously, prostate cancer was observed relatively rarely in China; however, in recent years the incidence of prostate cancer and associated mortality rates have been increasing (1).…”
