Dual view capsule endoscopic lens design

Abstract: A dual view capsule endoscopic (DVCE) lens is proposed with front view and back view functions. This is a hybrid lens with a catadioptric mirror and an aspherical surface to support both view functions. The field of view (FOV) for the front view function is 90 degrees. The FOV for the back view function is 260 to 290 degrees. The TV distortion for the front view and back view function is under 30% and 25%. The corner relative illuminations for the two view functions are above 0.53. The Modulation Transfer Func… Show more

“…More recently, capsules integrating multiple cameras have been developed and can potentially acquire images looking forward and backwards, such as PillCam® Colon 2 and UGI capsules. Similar results may also be achieved through lens design [ 90 ]. In particular, microlens arrays or lenticular lens arrays, which have been demonstrated in laparoscopic surgery [ 91 ], could be used to provide a multi-view image using a single sensor to maintain a small device footprint.…”

“…The aperture stop of the CE lens must be large enough to receive the optical flux at the image sensor. The common f -number of a CE lens [9,16] is larger than f -3.5, that is, it receives lower optical flux than does a lens with f -2.8. Therefore, a CE lens with f -2.8 is large enough to receive the optical flux at the color sensor.…”

“…[84] demonstrated that a compact dual-channel endoscopic probe can simultaneously observe the needs of forward and backward FoVs in the colon. Similar designs can also be used in endoscopic capsules [85]. Developing a new convex mirror and repositioning the camera viewpoint can improve the efficiency of the catadioptric camera in the RoboCup MSL robot [86].…”
