Durian Seed Utilization as a Base Material of Topical Gel

Abstract: Objective: This research is aimed to investigate that durian seed gum is potential as an excipient in topical drug delivery. Durian seed gum is isolated from low-cost source and usually discarded. Methods: A certain amount of durian seed gum was isolated and characterized by scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and infrared spectrophotometer. The isolation method is divided into centrifuge and heating method, and the results of both methods are compared in their ability to form a gel a… Show more

“…Stability test results showed that all preparations were stable, with no discoloration and shape change after storage for six cycles. The results of the spread test showed that the spreadability of all gel preparation formulas tested was in the skin's spread range of 5.0-7.0 cm, so it can be concluded that the gel preparations meet the requirements of good gel spreadability [17]. The therapeutic effect of gels depends on their distribution.…”

“…pH test results show all formulas have a pH that is close to the normal pH range of the skin so that all formulas can meet good and safe tropical preparation criteria if applied to damaged skin such as cuts. pH preparations that meet the pH criteria of the skin are in the range of 5-8 [17]. If the pH value of the composition preparation is too acidic, it will cause skin irritation, and if the pH value of the composition preparation is too alkaline, it will cause skin dryness and irritation [18].…”

“…Gum Extraction of Durian Seed 500 g of durian seed, peeled seeds, then mashed with a blender for 5 min with the addition of 5 L of distilled water, then added 2M NaOH to pH 12, then heated for 5 min and filtered. The supernatant placed in the refrigerator for 24 h, the supernatant decanted from the residue and added 10 L of 96% ethanol, then placed in the refrigerator for 24 h. The formed aggregate is filtered and washed with ethanol, then dried in a desiccator 6,12 .…”

“…Gum and starch have differences where gums include water-soluble polysaccharides while starches do not 5 . Durian seed gum is obtained by extracting the durian seed with water and then salting out with the addition of ethanol to obtain dry gum 6,7 . Research of phosphorylated durian seed gum with STMP has not been done so it is considered necessary to investigate the analysis of phosphorus levels and cross-link phosphate levels after cross-linked with STMP.…”
