Dust storm hazards

Abstract: Dust storms originate in many of the world's drylands and frequently present hazards to human society, both within the drylands themselves but also outside drylands due to long-range transport of aeolian sediments. Desert dust hazards can occur where dust is entrained, during the transport phase, and on deposition. This paper draws on studies in physical geography, medical geology and geomorphology to discuss case studies of accelerated soil erosion, the health effects of air pollution caused by desert aerosol… Show more

“…Figure 5 shows the HYSPLIT model's backward trajectory output with the Lagrangian approach and the GDAS input data to determine the air mass trajectory and path of particles to the Ahvaz. Ahvaz city, located in the center of Khuzestan province, was targeted because it is surrounded by dust sources, has the highest visibility reduction in two dust cases, and is one of the dustiest cities in the world [70][71][72]. For this purpose, the horizontal tracking of the movement of dust particles for 06:00, 09:00, and 12:00 UTC with a time step of 3 h was carried out.…”

“…The findings of several studies in the context of Iranian cities also show that the increase in dust storms in recent years has had a significant effect on respiratory mortality and morbidity [12]. In the urban and peri-urban agriculture sectors, except for a few positive impacts of dust storms, they have negatively impacted soil productivity and crop production and, consequently, revenue [13,14]. Therefore, spatiotemporal monitoring, modeling, and forecasting dust-storm phenomena and developing early warning systems can play an important role in mitigating and preventing their environmental, health, and socioeconomic consequences in human settlements, particularly in urban areas.…”
