Dust storms loads analyses—Iraq

Abstract: The dust storms that blow over Iraq were studied from December 2008 to March 2009. The total number of studied dust storms was eight; during each dust storm, samples were collected from the cities of Baghdad, Ramadi, Kut, Basra, Najaf, Karbala, Hilla and Tikrit. The climatic elements with the dust storms types were studied. The results of dust storms analyses reflect their increase in average toward the southwestern direction (average suspended, rising, regional dust storms were 8, 10, 15 days/ year, respectiv… Show more

“…Another interesting aspect is the possible effects of draining the Ahwar marshland which acts later as a new source area for dust [15]. Empty Quarter (EQ), Nafud [16] and Baluchistan (BSH) [17] deserts act as major sources of SDS within southern Arabian Gulf region. Quartz-poor fine sediment is a characteristic of soil sediments in MFP, HR, HZ, and BSH, while quartz-rich coarse sediment found in WD, NFD and EQ [18,19].…”

“…Table 3 shows average annual fallout (tons km -2 ) in regional and global regions. In general, the average dust fallout in the current study is significantly higher in comparison to surrounding regional and worldwide areas [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23]. Compared to other cities, the total annual dust deposition observed in Riyadh is almost the highest globally.…”

“…As AgNP-coated fabrics demonstrated effective inhibitive effects toward P. aeruginosa PAO1 and S. aureus, which can be traced in various environmental media including air, 55 it is promising that these modified fabrics would show potential antibacterial capabilities against other air-borne pathogens.…”

“…54 In addition, both P. aeruginosa and S. aureus have been isolated from dust samples during dust storm events. 55 As a result, we utilized P. aeruginosa and S. aureus in this study as model strains for an antimicrobial test due to their important roles as air-borne pathogens. This practice would yield a conclusive analysis of antibacterial efficacy of AgNP-coated respirators.…”
