Dynamic expression of manganese superoxide dismutase during mouse embryonic organogenesis

Abstract: The balance between reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant defense enzymes in embryos is necessary for normal embryogenesis. To determine the dynamic expression profile of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) in embryos, which is an essential antioxidant enzyme in embryonic organogenesis, the expression level and distribution of MnSOD mRNA and protein were investigated in mouse embryos, as well as extraembryonic tissues on embryonic days (EDs) 7.5-18.5. MnSOD mRNA levels were remarkably high in e… Show more

“…SODs inactivate superoxide radicals and GPxs reduces hydrogen peroxide to H 2 O at the expense of glutathione oxidation (McCord and Fridovich, ; Flohe et al, ). Antioxidant enzymes such as SOD1, SOD2, cGPx, and phospholipid hydroperoxide GPx are needed for normal embryo development (Baek et al, ; Yon et al, ; Jung et al, ; Yon et al, ). SOD and GPx mRNA levels are decreased in the fetal brain of alcohol‐treated pregnant mice (Drever et al, ).…”

“…Yon et al . (Yon et al, 2011) discovered an interesting dynamic in the expression of MnSOD in both embryonic and extra-embryonic tissues during the mouse gestational period studied (embryonic days (ED) 7.5–18.5). In extra-embryonic tissues, MnSOD expression at the mRNA and protein levels was elevated compared to embryonic tissues.…”

“…Copper, zinc, and manganese are cofactors of several enzymatic systems, in particular superoxide dismutases (SOD) involved in regulating oxidative stress. Both Mn-SOD and Cu-Zn-SOD are well expressed in choroid plexus throughout development (Yon et al, 2008 , 2011 ). Thus, a primary function of metal transporters in the choroid plexus may be to supply metals required for proper functioning of the blood-CSF barrier.…”
