Dynamic finite element model updating of prestressed concrete continuous box-girder bridge

Abstract: The dynamic fi nite element model (FEM) of a prestressed concrete continuous box-girder bridge, called the Tongyang Canal Bridge, is built and updated based on the results of ambient vibration testing (AVT) using a real-coded accelerating genetic algorithm (RAGA). The objective functions are defi ned based on natural frequency and modal assurance criterion (MAC) metrics to evaluate the updated FEM. Two objective functions are defi ned to fully account for the relative errors and standard deviations of the natu… Show more

“…Most of bridge FEMU studies have been based on operational modal frequencies and mode shapes from ambient vibration tests using accelerometers for various bridge types: suspension bridge [1], [2], cable-stayed bridge [3], [4], Pre Stressed Concretre (PSC) box-girder bridge [5], [6], and arch bridge [7], [8]. Accelerometers were widely used due to their ease of use in the field.…”

“…Heterogeneous data in previous studies for FEMU includes modal properties [2,3,9,12], deflection including strain [13,15,16,21]. The modal properties, deflection and strain with a load test have been widely used, while the rotational angle at supports has been recently investigated [14,22,23].…”

“…Conventionally, the modal properties have been widely used for FEMU, since modal properties can be readily extracted from ambient vibration tests [3,4]. The FEMU using natural frequencies and mode-shapes have been applied to suspension bridges [5,6], cable-stayed bridges [3,7], pre-stressed concrete girder bridges [8,9,10] and steel-box girder bridge [11]. To improve the results of FEMU, model flexibility [12] has been also investigated.…”

“…The GA was selected as the optimization algorithm because of the presence of multiple local optimums in the search space. In this sense, GA were used by Xiankun [10] to update the Southbound Tongyang Canal Bridge, a prestressed concrete continuous box girder bridge, from natural frequencies and MAC criteria. Jaishi et al [11] employed gradient-based optimization to update the FEM of a concrete-filled steel tubular half-through tied-arch bridge located in Xining (China).…”
