Dynamic Model of Displacement

Abstract: This paper focuses on an important pre-condition for effective forecasting—a theoretical model that captures the full range of drivers that are implicated in decisions to move from one location to another. The paper first reviews the academic literature on the drivers of displacement. It also discusses the corollary of displacement—immobility that may be forced or voluntary. The heart of the article is the model of displacement that we have developed. We describe the process through which we developed the mode… Show more

“…Assessing the directional effects of vulnerability factors on displacement is complex and context‐specific, as many key variables (e.g. poverty, informal land and housing tenure, irregular migration status) present both a positive and negative effect on the likelihood of being displaced (Esnard et al, 2011; IIED & UNDRR, 2021; Martin et al, 2021). This fact is however not always recognized in relevant work (Thalheimer et al, 2021; UNDRR, 2019a).…”

“…A wide range of factors influence which mobility patterns will occur in the context of environmental change, as illustrated in Figure 1: dynamic model of migration (DMM; Martin et al, 2021), which builds on the causal model developed during the Foresight Project on environmental change and migration (Government Office for Science, 2011). It captures macrodrivers, of which environmental ones are only one dimension although they may have an impact upon the others.…”

“…These methods sift through large volumes of data to generate estimates of displacement figures. For instance, Martin et al (2021) developed the Dynamic Model of Displacement (DMD) using machine learning techniques to understand the factors influencing decision-making and the consequences of disaster displacement.…”
