Dynamic Network Slicing for the Tactile Internet

Abstract: Tactile internet" refers to a network that can support real-time interactions between human operators and remote cyber-physical systems as if they were near to each other. For this, the network should support ultra-low latency communication, often referred to as the 1ms challenge. However, we observe that network requirements, such as latency and bandwidth, of tactile internet based cyber-physical systems or Tactile Cyber-Physical Systems (TCPS) are not static: they severely fluctuate over time. Therefore, for… Show more

“…So far, similar statistical modeling in telesurgery applications has not been observed in previous studies. Most of the previous research, such as [6], [7], and [8], has used optimization methods for analytical modeling. However, since the implementation of these algorithms is generally time-consuming, we have tried to use more appropriate methods for analytical modeling in this study.…”

“…They have also developed a smooth scheduling strategy based on user experience. In [7], the authors have proposed a mechanism for optimizing the network resources, which dynamically creates network slices for users based on tactile cyberphysical systems. Their solution consists of two main components.…”

“…We also used P4-programmable switches to dynamically create, discard and switch network slices (i.e., reserved resources, with known latency characteristics, dedicated to a specific type of application) [56]. This approach demonstrates how Quality-of-Service (QoS) can be attained for dynamic applications that require stringent latency constraints, such as remote surgery, which is relevant for the NCP.…”

“…As traffic volumes are unpredictable and generally change over time, a static slicing solution either over-provisions resources or does not guarantee a certain QoS [20]. A slicing solution that supports elasticity, i.e., the ability to automatically scale the assigned network resources to match the current traffic volumes, would solve this problem.…”
